Green Party candidate Rebecca Dixon McWaters will fight the by-election in the Ferryhill division of County Durham.

The by-election has been called following the death of Labour Cllr Brian Avery. It will take place on 24th February.

Rebecca, who has lived in Ferryhill since 2013, is passionate about representing the division on the County Council and, with the help of enthusiastic Green Party volunteers, is hoping to get elected.

“Ferryhill and the neighbouring community of Kirk Merrington have been ignored for too long,” she said. “There are several local issues that never seem to get addressed. Creating better job-opportunities, improving road safety, and tackling litter and dog-dirt are top of my priorities”

“The division already has a Labour and a Conservative councillor, so I am pitching my campaign to electors as a strong independent voice for Ferryhill.”

“I am reaching out to Green Party members in the county to come to Ferryhill each weekend leading up to the by-election to support my campaign and help me get elected. It will be tremendous fun, a great opportunity to meet other members and a great experience for those who have never done this type of active political work before.”

“It is so important to increase the Green presence in local councils and put Greens into decision-making positions to ensure the world manages the transition to a green and fair economy as effectively as possible.”

“I believe I have a very real chance of becoming the Green Party’s second councillor on Durham County Council following the superb victory of Jonathan Elmer last May. But even if I don’t get elected, the campaign will have made a big impression on local people and will help build our profile for future elections.”

Party members are being asked to get involved in a raft of planning strategies in the county.

Durham County Council (DCC) is currently consulting on draft masterplans for Newton Aycliffe, Peterlee, Stanley, and the ‘3 Towns’ of Crook, Willington and Tow Law as part of its Towns and Villages programme.

Together with a new regeneration Framework for Durham City and an updated Chester-le-Street masterplan, the documents set out potential and current projects aimed at attracting investment/funding to boost the prosperity of each location.

Whilst there is scarce detail in some of the plans, the Party is encouraging members to get involved if there is a particular plan relating to their own area.

Our Green County Councillor Jonathan Elmer says: “It is vitally important that members living in areas subject to masterplans and planning applications engage with the consultations to ensure that environmental issues are brought to the fore and the outcomes are as green as they can be.

“I can assure people that all comments are taken into account.”

The public consultation on all the masterplans runs until 14 January 2022: www.durham.gov.uk/consultation
