COP26 – the moment of truth

This autumn is a vital one for the climate.

From 31 October to 12 November, world leaders, scientists and NGOs will meet in Glasgow for COP26 – the UN Climate Change Conference to discuss the climate emergency and recommit to take the necessary actions to save the planet. Or not.

The Green Party UK, including County Durham and other North East branches, along with Greens from all over the world, will make their presence felt to remind world leaders that they are acting on behalf of us all, not just narrow vested interests.

Climate and nature emergencies resulting from climate change are happening right now. Wildfires are now a regular occurrence across southern Europe and the United States. A few months ago, Germany was devastated by unprecedented floods. A report by our own MPs has warned the Government that the UK is woefully under-prepared to deal with the extreme weather consequences of global warming.

In Glasgow, world leaders must commit to reduce the burning of fossil fuels to achieve the target of keeping the rise in global temperatures within 1.5C while protecting lives and livelihoods.

Ensuring that poorer countries are supported, financially and otherwise, to make their contributions will also be on the agenda.

One solution favoured by Green parties around the world is the introduction of a carbon tax to ensure the polluter pays and to use the money raised to fund the changes we need.

There will be a mass rally in Glasgow on Saturday 6th November to remind world leaders of their responsibilities to the planet and all the life that calls it home. County Durham Green Party will be organising its own rally that day in Market Square, Durham, to raise awareness that climate change is happening here and now. Further details will be posted on the website closer to the date.
