Shincliffe declares climate emergency

Shincliffe Parish Council has committed to doing its bit to reach “net zero” emissions.

Members have unanimously agreed to declare a climate and ecological emergency, and to call for a joint local & national government Task Force to plan action to reach ‘net zero’ emissions.

Green councillor Stephen Ashfield said:

“Many local authorities are playing an important role in the UK taking action to achieve net zero carbon emissions, and to protect and revitalise local wildlife and natural habitats.

“Parliament has already declared an Environment and Climate Emergency. All councils, however small, can do the same.

“There is a Bill before Parliament-the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill which, if it becomes law, would require the government to develop a strategy to address the emergency that would ensure the ecological emergency is tackled shoulder to shoulder with the climate crisis in a joined-up approach.”

Shincliffe Parish Council has set up a climate action group which will lead on environmental initiatives in Shincliffe Village, High Shincliffe and Sherburn House.
